Rebuild By Design

After Hurricane Sandy impacted 13 states, costing more than $65 billion in damages and economic loss, President Obama’s Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force launched an innovative design competition, Rebuild by Design, that coupled innovation and global expertise with community insight to develop implementable solutions to the region’s most complex needs.


Made In Brownsville

Made in Brownsville is a youth creative agency and innovation hub providing a gateway for young people to learn marketable hard skills in STEAM, access postsecondary education, achieve economic mobility, and engage in placed-based community revitalization.

Neighborhood Health Action Centers

As part of the NYC Department of Health’s investment in key neighborhoods, the Center for Health Equity’s Neighborhood Health Action Center initiative is revitalizing underutilized Health Department buildings by co-locating health services, community health centers, public hospital clinical services, community-based organizations and service providers.

COMMUNITY VISION AND INTERAGENCY ALIGNMENT: A COMMUNITY PLANNING PROCESS TO PROMOTE ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION

Am J Public Health, April 2016. In 2010, the Brooklyn Active Transportation Community Planning Initiative launched in 2 New York City neighborhoods. Over a 2-year planning period, residents participated in surveys, school and community forums, neighborhood street assessments, and activation events—activities that highlighted the need for safer streets locally.

Keep the Whole City in Mind

Am J Public Health, April 2016. Not all places or communities may need the same type of place-based approach. A collective impact approach may be justified in communities with entrenched social problems, but other communities may benefit from other strategies. The research shows that there are limits to collective efficacy and collective impact approaches.

CAN EXERCISING SENIORS HELP REVIVE A BROOKLYN NEIGHBORHOOD?

WBUR News, February 2014. The Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y., is known for many things, among them huge public housing projects, extremely high poverty and crime. At the local community center, about 40 older women can be seen dancing their hearts out, wiggling their hips and pumping their fist to the sounds of "Do You Love Me?" The women are decked out for exercise, wearing sweat pants, T-shirts and knit caps.

Active in her neighborhood bike club, a senior citizen in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, contacted the Brownsville Partnership and the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), to request the installation of bike lanes.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND WATER DISTRIBUTION IN QUITO, ECUADOR

Wagner Review, May 2009. As investments in water and sanitation projects increase, it is imperative to consider the regional effects that climate change will have on water in the future. Regional temperature changes and the subsequent consequences for glacial melt will soon impact the water supply in the city of Quito, Ecuador. This article highlights Quito's current climate conditions, projects the impact that climate change will have on the city's water system and other sectors, and suggests mitigation and adaptation strategies for the future.
